If already you have a custom domain (www.yourdomain.com) with blogger blog and if you have another blogger blog with www.yourdomain.blogspot.com and are looking for how to adding a subdomain (www.subdomain.yourdomain.com) for blogger blog then, that article is for you.

It is not always necessary to register a brand new domain if already your own domain is working perfectly.

What is a subdomain?

Simply we can define it as a subdivision of a domain. In the Domain Name System (DNS)hierarchy, a domain is a domain that is a part of the main domain. It is part of a larger domain.

It is used as an easy way to create a more memorable Web address for specific or unique content with a domain. (blog.yourdomain.com, tech.yourdomain.com) Most of the times a subdomain would be better for you rather than a new domain.

A new domain is a distinctly different website, while a subdomain is a directory on the main domain that operates independently of the main domain. So You can easily create a subdomain using a domain you already own, for example, I already have a domain, www.takitakibiz.com and I want to add another subdomain like blog.takitakibiz.com (subdomain.yourdomain.com).

Not only one you can also add multiple subdomains (info.yourdomain.com, tech.yourdomain.com) or multiple levels of subdomains (info.blog.yourblog.com).

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of using a Subdomain?

Advantages

  •      It is free, if your hosting plan allows, once you have bought a domain you can add subdomains without any cost.
  •      Setting up a subdomain is more preferable and easier for the business due to technical implementation.
  •     Also in a marketing perspective, by keeping the content on a separate URL or most likely Sub domain directly on the main web site.
  •     Unless you have a large number of subdomains on one domain Google will not penalize a site.
  •    Easy to install or upload anything to a subdomain without impact on your main domain.
  •     It helps to target a particular reader group, market segment or country.
  •     Helps to highlight a major topic from your main site.
  •     For target or highlight a major topic from your main site or use for a different topic or niche.
  •     It is easier to manage a web site with one main domain and several subdomains than one with several different domain names that may have to be interconnected if you want them all associated with your brand.
  •     You might get more links to one domain rather than individual links to separate domains

Disadvantages

  •     Search engines view subdomain sites as separate sites, now search engines treated subdomains as separate domains when it comes to determining rankings.
  •     Considerations need to be made for developing subdomains into its own entity. This consists of building inbound links from other relevant, established websites and featuring lots of good quality content. If your main domain has accumulated 1000 quality backlinks over time, it would now be necessary to build up at least 1000 quality backlinks for the subdomain if you expect to see similar results.
  • The URL might appear long.
